Our Story

The Butcher Shop and Grill didn't start in a boardroom. It started at a butcher's counter.

In the mid-1930s, Fay Pick became the first female butcher in South Africa, working at her family's Farmers' Meat Supply. In the 1940s, she married Dave Pick, also a butcher, and together they built a life around quality meat and honest service at the Kalk Bay Butchery.

Their son Alan grew up behind that counter. By the time he was 24, he was already running restaurants. He started as a junior partner at Stellenbosch's Arizona Spur, then built Late Nite Al's in Hillbrow, where 500g steaks at 4 am became legendary. From there came Al's Grillhouse in Rosebank, which still stands today as The Grillhouse at The First, over 22 years later.

In 1994, Alan saw an opportunity in what was becoming Sandton Square. That became The Butcher Shop and Grill. And with it, he introduced something no one else was doing. A walk-up butchery counter where diners could choose their own cut, their own size, and their own grade of meat before it hit the grill.

That idea changed steakhouse dining in South Africa. And it's still what sets this place apart today.

Now, under the leadership of Alan's son Dani, the family tradition continues. Dani brings global hospitality standards from his training in Switzerland, combined with the same commitment to quality that Fay and Dave built their name on over 80 years ago.

Today, The Butcher Shop and Grill operates in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and the Middle East. The Sandton flagship seats up to 500 guests, with a dedicated private dining room for 40 guests. 2015 and 2025 here. Still the same outstanding experience. You have to order from the butcher counter directly and get your individual cut and size. Starters are very good and they have a great selection. Paired our dinner with a nice bottle of Groot Constantia Pinotage from 2023 and went very well with the meat.

A Johannesburg institution. One of the first places to come to for a steak fix when I'm in town. Prices are fair and my T-bone last night was heavenly, cooked perfectly with nothing but salt. The bernaise sauce was slightly too tangy but the black peppercorn sauce was delicious. Service is usually prompt and professional, but a bunch of waiters standing around at the entrance is a bad look, intimidating rather than welcoming. Nevertheless, a fine restaurant and cant wait to go back.

1. What makes The Butcher Shop and Grill different from other steakhouses?

The biggest difference is control. You walk up to our butchery counter and hand-select your own cut of meat. You choose the size, the grade, and how it's prepared. Then you visit one of our two on-site wine cellars and pick your own bottle. Most restaurants ask you to trust a menu description. Here, you see it, choose it, and enjoy it. That's been our approach since 1994.

2. What kind of meat do you offer?

We serve only the best mature aged meat. That includes superb local beef and lamb, Argentinian ribeye, Kobe-style wagyu, and Dutch veal. Our meat hangs in carcass for three days, then our rump, sirloin, fillet, ribeye, T-bone, and prime rib are aged for a further 21 to 40 days. You can choose on or off the bone, grass-fed or grain-fed.

3. What if someone in my group doesn't eat red meat?

Our menu goes well beyond steak. We offer fresh fish, seafood, giant crayfish, langoustines, prawns, local oysters, and salmon. All sourced from environmentally responsible and locally authentic suppliers. There is something for everyone at the table.

Yes. We have several private dining rooms, each with its own degree of intimacy and exclusivity. They can accommodate between 14 and 40 guests in various configurations. Our Johannesburg flagship also has an exclusive private dining room for 40 guests. Let us know your requirements when you book and we'll prepare accordingly.

6. Where are you located?

We have two South African locations. Our Johannesburg flagship is at Shop 30, Nelson Mandela Square, Sandton. Our Cape Town location is at 125 Beach Road, Mouille Point.

7. Is there a minimum spend?

Yes. There is a basic minimum charge of R200 per head for adults only. This reflects the premium quality of the dining experience and is easily met by most guests.

8. What is your cancellation or booking policy?

One bill per table is standard. All major credit cards are welcome, and no cheques are accepted. For pre-booked tables of 10 or more guests, a deposit is required to secure the reservation. Due to the size and nature of our steaks, please expect up to 40 minutes of grilling time.

9. Can I buy meat from the butchery without dining in?

Absolutely. Our adjoining butchery and deli is open to everyone. You'll find the same quality meat, chicken, fish, and seafood we serve in the restaurant, available for purchase. Our specialist butchers will cut your meat exactly as you like it. Every time.
